Zerbini Named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week
March 23, 2009
California men's tennis sophomore Pedro Zerbini has been named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 16-22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Zerbini leads the Golden Bears with 16 singles wins this season and is ranked ninth in doubles with senior Geoff Chizever with a 22-4 overall record. He is the first Cal player to earn the honor since Pierre Mouillon was selected this same week (March 19) in 2007. It is his first such honor and the fifth overall for the Bears (Conor Niland was named player of the week three times in 2006). Women's tennis senior Bojana Bobusic was named the Pac-10's women's tennis player of the week today as well.
Zerbini led the Bears to their fifth consecutive win last week as Cal took out Southern Methodist, 4-3, and San Francisco, 6-1, at the fourth annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Tennis Classic. The second-year native of Brazil partnered with Chizever for their 22nd win of the year with a big 8-2 victory over No. 38-ranked Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh of SMU and then took home an 8-3 win against Asaf Cohen and Thong Tu of USF. Chizever and Zerbini are now 11-1 at the top doubles court in dual matches. Zerbini also won his team-high 15th and 16th singles matches of the year as he claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win against SMU's David Costa before wiping out USF's No. 122-ranked Tu, 6-3, 6-1.
The Bears open Pac-10 play this week with two matches at Hellman Tennis Complex as they host USC on Friday, March 27, at 1:30 p.m. and UCLA on Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m. Live video streaming of the matches can be found at CalBears.com.
