Cal Gears Up for Stanford Invitational This Week
March 24, 2009
California makes its first of three trips to the Farm this season as it will compete in the Stanford Invitational on March 27-28 on the Stanford campus. The Stanford Invitational kicks off on Friday with the men's javelin at 10:30 a.m. and on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the hammer. Before the Stanford Invitational, the Golden Bears head to UC Davis for the UC Davis Multi Meet, which starts on Wednesday, March 25, and concludes on Thursday. The UC Davis Multi Meet begins at 10:30 a.m. with the decathlon. The heptathlon starts at 11 a.m.
Last Time Out: Hornet Invitational
Patrick Kowalsky and Ryan Shuler posted NCAA outdoor regional qualifying marks in winning the men's shot put and pole vault, respectively, last Saturday at the Hornet Invitational held at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. Kowalsky notched a qualifying mark of 56-8 (17.27 meters), while Shuler claimed a qualifying mark of 16-6.75 (5.05 meters) to tie the meet record. Cal sent a small contingent of Golden Bears to Sacramento, not including any of the nine athletes it sent to the recent NCAA Indoor Championships.
Three Bears will represent the team at the UC Davis Multis - Kyle Mills-Bunje, Kevin Kuechler and Tifani Grimes. Mills-Bunje competed in last year's competition at Edwards Stadium, placing second overall. Kuechler also participated unattached and finished in sixth place.
Among Cal's featured athletes at the Stanford Invitational will be All-Americans Martin Maric in the javelin, Cherrelle Garrett in the 200 and the 400, Francis Gadayan in the 800, Kandi Bonty in the 400, Inika McPherson in the high jump and Kristin Holmes in the 100 and the 200. Allison Stokke makes her outdoor debut in the pole vault after setting the freshman record last season at 13-5.75. Senior Jake Hanson will run in the 400 and the 400 hurdles, and Cal's strong group of triple jumpers - Artensia Young, Mercedes Marchbanks and Tracey Stewart - will also participate.
Last Year's Stanford Invitational
Leading the way for the Bears at last year's Stanford Invitational was Ed Wright, who won the high jump, and Patrick Kowalsky, who claimed top honors in the shot put.
Kowalsky won the shot put with a mark of 54-0.50 (16.47m). The score was a new personal best for Kowalsky, who also placed 12th in the discus.
Mark Matusak also turned in strong a performance, recording an NCAA regional-qualifying time in the 1500, clocking in at 3:45.85 and placed ninth in the event.
On the women's team, Rowena Tam led the Bears in the 5000, taking ninth overall and clocking in a new personal-best time of 17:01.31.
NCAA Regional Qualifiers
Through two outdoor meets this season, Cal has nine NCAA regional qualifiers - Brook Turner (400), Kellan Patterson (100), Jordan Paul (110-H), Inika McPherson (High Jump), Kristen Meister (High Jump), Artensia Young (Triple Jump), Martin Maric (Discus), Patrick Kowalsky (Shot Put) and Ryan Shuler (Pole Vault).
