Sandys Stands Fifth After Day One of Big Green Desert Multis

SCOTTSDALE - Two members of the Arizona State University track and field team began competition at the Big Green in the Desert Multis on Wednesday afternoon, which is being hosted by Dartmouth College at Scottsdale Community College, as both true freshman are among the Top 8 through five events. Jamie Sandys has scored 3,223 points and currently stands fifth overall while Jeremy Marcinko, who is competing unattached from ASU in the meet, stands eighth in the decathlon with 3,163 points.

Sandys opened the day in sixth place as he scored 673 points in the 100m dash before jumping to third overall with his third-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 6.54m for 707 points. He slipped to fourth overall in the standings through three events as he scored 499 points in the shot put with a toss of 10.22m, the eighth-best throw of the competition, before scoring another 644 points by clearing 1.82m in the high jump to tie for fifth event and slip to sixth overall. In the 400m dash, the final event of the day, Sandys ran 52.27 to finish sixth in the event with 700 points, but improved one place in the overall standings to fifth with 3,223 points.

Marcinko opened just ahead of Sandys be running 11.83 for 685 points in the 100m dash to stand fifth overall before falling the ninth overall with a leap of 6.14m in the long jump, the eighth-best mark, for 617 points. The shot put allowed him to climb the standings back to sixth overall as he finished fifth in the event with a toss of 11.11m (553 points) before slipping to eighth overall with an eighth-place showing in the high jump as he earned 569 points with a clearance of 1.73m. In the last event of the day, Marcinko ran the fourth-best time of 51.67 in the 400m dash to score 739 points to remain fifth overall in the competition with 3,163 points through day one.

Sandys and Marcinko will conclude competition at the Multis on Thursday. The rest of the team will compete at the ASU Invitational on Friday (hammer only) and Saturday (all other events) at Sun Angel Stadium.
