USC Finishes Doubleheader Sweep With 5-1 Win Over Brown
March 25, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Senior left-hander Anthony Vasquez (San Antonio, Texas/Texas A&M) threw eight innings, allowing only one run on three hits Wednesday, as the USC Trojans completed a doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 win over the Brown Bears at Dedeaux Field. USC (10-10) won game one of the doubleheader, 7-4.
Vasquez had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings before Chris Tanabe singled to left.
Three freshmen in the bottom part of the Trojans' order (Kevin Roundtree, Garret Houts and Alex Sherrod) had two hits each while freshman Ricky Oropesa hit his third homer of the season with a solo shot in the fifth.
Roundtree singled in the second and advanced to second on Will Weidig's wild pitch before scoring on Houts' RBI single. Sherrod's bunt single provided another run in the third. Brown (3-10) scored a run in the sixth, but USC added two insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Hector Rabago.
The Trojans complete their 13-game homestand with a Pac-10 Conference series this weekend against No. 3 Arizona State, Friday-Sunday (March 27-29). Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast via a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
