USC Takes First Game Of Doubleheader, 7-4, Over Brown
March 25, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Robert Stock's bases-loaded triple provided the go-ahead runs as part of a five-run eighth inning Wednesday as the USC Trojans won the first game of the doubleheader against the Brown Bears, 7-4, at Dedeaux Field. Freshman right-hander Chad Smith (Thousand Oaks/Thousand Oaks HS) went eight innings for the Trojans to get the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Sophomore second baseman Joe De Pinto (Sunland/St. Francis HS) went 4-for-4 with one RBI for USC (9-10) while Stock finished with a 1-for-3 day and four RBI.
Brown (3-9) starter Rob Wilcox matched Smith with seven innings, giving up just two runs on six hits.
Three errors by the Trojans in the second inning led to two runs as Brown took the 2-1 lead. Robert Papenhause hit an RBI double down the third base line and later scored when Mike DiBiase hit a hard ground ball that first baseman Ricky Oropesa misplayed for the second run.
USC tied it in the bottom half of the inning on De Pinto's RBI single, but the Bears responded with a run in the third. Nick Punal and Matt Nuzzo hit back-to-back singles and Dan Shapiro doubled to left for the run before Smith induced the inning-ending double play from Matt Colantonio.
In the eighth, the Trojans were able to load the bases off reliever Matthew Kimball after De Pinto and Mike O'Neill singled, followed by a walk to Anthony Vasquez. Stock then laced a line drive down the first base side to clear the bases for the 5-3 lead. Hector Rabago and Billy Pinkerton completed the scoring with RBI singles.
USC and Brown will play game two of the doubleheader tonight. The Trojans complete their 13-game homestand with a Pac-10 Conference series this weekend against No. 3 Arizona State, Friday-Sunday (March 27-29). Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All four games will be broadcast via a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
