March 26, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Three Washington gymnasts were named to Pac-10 All-Conference teams, as announced by Commissioner Tom Hanson. Freshman Hatsune Akaogi, senior Ashley Houghting and sophomore Samantha Walior were honored by the league.
Akaogi was named to the All-Pac-10 All-Around second team for her performances this season. A Cupertino, Calif. native, Akaogi has competed in the all-around in every Husky meet this season, achieving a career-high score of 39.025 back on Feb. 21. At last week's Pac-10 Championship, Akaogi scored a 38.775 to come in 10th overall.
Houghting, a senior from Welland, Ontario, was named to the All-Pac-10 Vault first team. Houghting is ranked No. 8 in the country on vault with a season RQS of 9.915. Houghting won four vault titles this season, including three over Pac-10 rivals. Competing on two sprained ankles, Houghting still scored a 9.900 on her vault at the Pac-10 Championship last weekend, tying for fourth in the event.
Walior was named to the All-Pac-10 Floor first team after amassing a season RQS of 9.840 and finishing sixth in the event at the Pac-10 Championship. The Prior Lake, Minn. native tied her season-high score of 9.850 three times this season, including her performance at the Pac-10 meet last week.
The All-Conference first team consists of the top six all-around competitors, plus three competitors in each individual event who are not among the all-around honorees. Individuals may earn All-Conference honors in multiple individual events. Scores are determined by a combination of 50 percent regional qualifying score (RQS) and 50 percent Pacific-10 Conference Championship score. The All-Conference second team consists of 10 individuals who were not honored on the first team.
The Huskies are back in action next Saturday, April 4 at 6pm as they host the NCAA West Regional at Bank of America Arena. For ticket information, log on to GoHuskies.com or call 206-543-2000.
