Cougars to Open Spring in Spokane

What's Happening This Week: The Cougars travel north to Spokane to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the Fawley Cup Saturday, March 28...races begin at 9 a.m. on the Liberty Lake course.
Fawley Cup History: WSU's and Gonzaga's varsity eight boats are set for the 18th annual race for the Fawley Cup...Cougars have taken the cup in 15 of the regatta's 17 years...last season's race would have been the 18th, but was cancelled due to inclement weather...Bulldogs' two victories came in 1997 and 2007.
WSU Head Rowing Coach Jane LaRiviere on Gonzaga: 'They are feisty. They are going to be up and ready to race. They beat us massively in 2007 and that will never happen again. They may beat us fair and square but we will never underestimate them.'
Cougars vs. Bulldogs: WSU and Gonzaga met twice during the fall season...the varsity eight crossed the finish line ahead of the Bulldogs at both the Head of the Spokane, Oct. 25, and the Head of the Snake, Oct. 31...Cougar boats won four of the six races in both meeting in October.
On Tap for the Cougars: The varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight will head south for the San Diego Crew Classic April 4-5, while the third varsity eight and second novice eight will travel to Seattle to take on cross-state rival Washington at the Husky Invitational April 4.
Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere is in her seventh year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...the Cougars have raced in four NCAA Championships under LaRiviere, including a ninth place finish in 2008...she is joined by assistant coach Tara Medina, novice coach Corrie McGrath, and graduate assistant Crystal Culp...Medina is in her third year as an assistant, after coaching one year for Michigan...McGrath is in her first year coaching at WSU, after coaching stints at Clemson and the University of Central Florida...Culp comes to WSU after coaching in Canada and Michigan for the past three years.
