Beavers Drop Second Game of Civil War in 10 Innings
March 28, 2009
PORTLAND, Ore. - Stefen Romero produced his team-leading 11th multi-hit game of the season and Greg Peavey did not allow an earned run for the second straight start, but the Oregon State baseball team dropped an extra innings contest, 3-2, to Oregon in front of 15,540 at PGE Park in Portland, Ore.
Romero went 2-for-5 from the plate, as well as scoring one Beaver (14-6 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10 Conference) run and driving in the other. Joey Wong equaled Romero's hit total, going 2-for-3 with singles in the first and fourth innings. The two hits gave Wong his eighth two-hit game of the season.
Peavey turned in his second consecutive outing without allowing an earned run. He spread out four hits over six innings and struck out three. He, however, did not figure in the decision.
The game was scoreless through the first six innings of the game as Peavey was matched by Oregon starter Erik Stavert. John Wallace got the Beavers their first lead in the seventh inning with a hard-hit single up the middle that drove in Romero from second. Romero helped the Beavers tack on their second run with a double to the right-centerfield wall that scored Ortiz from first.
The Ducks (11-13, 1-1) tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and a scoreless ninth inning sent the game into extras. With a runner on second in the 10th inning, pinch hitter John Adamson drove a ball into rightfield off OSU reliever Sam Gaviglio (3-1) to score Caleb Tommasini and give Oregon the 3-2 win.
The rubber match of the three game Civil War series will be played on Sunday, March 29th at PGE Park with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch.
Oregon State Notes: Adalberto Santos made his third consecutive start as the three-hitter in the Beavers lineup... The game was delayed for an hour due to rain... Runners on the corner pickoff by beaverfs to end the fifth... With runners on the corner and two outs in the fifth for the Ducks, Caleb Tommasini was caught off first base by pitcher Greg Peavey. While the Beavers ran him down, Antony Kreitz attempted to take home, but was caught by the Beavers to end the inning... The seventh inning hit by John Wallace gives him a four-game hit streak.
