March 28, 2009
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - California won seven out of eight races against Clemson and Virginia on Saturday at the Pac-10 Challenge. The Golden Bears varsity 8, varsity 4 and novice 8 had a successful first day of the regatta, defeating Virginia and Clemson. The Cal second varsity eight defeated Clemson 7.00.0- 7.01.8 but lost to UVa by a boat length.
The two-day Pac-10 Challenge, presented by Stanford, ends on Sunday.
Cal's varsity eight posted a fast time of 6.26.6 against UVa (6:34.9) in the first session. The Bears came back in the afternoon to defeat Clemson in rough water, 6.49.4-6:52.0.
'Coming into today, I knew we had a pretty good team, but you never know what is going to happen until you actually go out and race,' Cal head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'Now that we have had a few races, I am pleased with the results in general.'
The Bears had a strong performance against Clemson, but all of the races were a tough fight, including the novice 8's 7:41.1-7:41.8 win over the Tigers.
'I am glad to come away with the wins against Clemson; they really raced us hard' said O'Neill.
He added, 'The team as a whole performed well, and we all agree that we can improve in a number of ways. Tomorrow's race against Ohio State will be a great test.'
Tomorrow Cal's varsity eight will take on Ohio State at 9:24 am, on the final day of Pac-10 Challenge. The third varsity 8 will race against Wisconsin's lightweight boat at 8:50 a.m.
