WTrack Impressive at Distance Carnival
March 28, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Freshman Casey Masterson won her section of the 1,500-meters and sophomore Hayley Oveson won the 2-mile run as the Beavers made an impressive showing at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, a meet that was primarily to be used as extended training for Oregon State women’s track.
“We made a very strong showing today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “The past few weeks virtually everyone has been sick. I was really pleased with how well our women ran today. Coming in here I couldn’t have speculated we would have dominated as much as we did.”
Masterson (Eugene, Ore.) ran the 1,500-meters in 4:35.28, the 10th fastest time in Oregon State history. Senior Holly Thomson also ran well running fourth fastest time of the day finishing at 4:39.68.
“Even though she still was not feeling well and her energy level low, Casey put together a solid race,” Sullivan said. “She had a 64 second final lap. She was happy with that and just happy to run with the team. And Holly, she ran a good race that was 10 seconds faster than at Linfield. I expect to see some fast times from these two later on in the spring.”
Sophomore Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.) wrapped up the day for the Beavers by taking second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Macias came in with Oregon State’s third fastest time in school history at 11:09.83.
“This will definitely be her event,” Sullivan said. “She ran 22 seconds faster than at Linfield, and she still has a lot of room to improve. Once we work out some technical stuff with the water jump, I could see her shaving another 20 seconds off her time. Another solid race for Jennifer.”
Oregon State took places 1-7 in the 2-mile and had eight of the top 10 finishes. Oveson (La Grande, Ore.) took the top spot with a time of 10:47.14.
“Overall, I am really pleased with how well we have dealt with all the sickness and aches and pains we’ve encountered,' Sullivan said. 'This was a great trip that I think got the engine fired up to take us into the season.'
The meet will be scored as a double-dual between Oregon State and San Francisco as well as the Beavers being paired with Santa Clara. Results were not available at press time.
Oregon State returns to the track Apr. 11, for the Woody Wilson Open in Davis, Calif.
