Cardinal Blanks UW Baseball, 11-0

March 29, 2009

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford freshman lefty Brett Mooneyham held Washington scoreless on only one hit over seven innings as the Cardinal blanked the Huskies, 11-0, Sunday at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal won the three-game series with two wins.

Mooneyham (1-1), the son for former big-leaguer Bill Mooneyham, finished the game with 10 strikeouts and three walks in his seven innings of work. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before David Bentrott's leadoff bunt single broke it up. Drew Storen allowed a hit over the final two innings to wrap up the shutout.

The Cardinal improved to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10 while Washington dropped to 10-14 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

UW starter Tyler Cheney (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in just two and one-third innings of work.

Stanford scored the game's first run in the second inning on an RBI single from first baseman Brent Milleville.

In the third, the Cardinal broke through for four runs. After at two-run triple from Toby Gerhart, Auburn High graduate Kellen Kiilsgaard belted a two-run homer to right, his sixth of the season, to make it a 5-0 game.

Stanford added three more runs in the sixth. Center fielder Joey August went deep with a one-out solo homer and later, a two-out, two-run double from Colin Walsh made it an 8-0 score.

Walsh, who had four hits on the day, added another RBI in the eighth. Kiilsgaard also drove in two more that innings, leading to the Cardinal's final total.

Washington's only other hit in the game came in the eighth, a clean single from Jake Rife off of reliever Drew Storen.

Next up for the Huskies is a two-game series vs. Gonzaga Tuesday and Wednesday at Husky Ballpark. In an addition to the schedule, the first Gonzaga game will air live on KKNW radio. Next weekend, the Huskies play host to Arizona State. Friday's game will be played at Safeco Field. The three ASU games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
