March 31, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Freshman right-hander Trevor Bauer of the UCLA baseball team has captured Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career, as announced Tuesday by the Pac-10 Conference office. Bauer earned two victories as UCLA went 3-1 last week, limiting the opposition to two runs and recording 12 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.
Bauer logged a career-high eight strikeouts in eight innings on Wednesday, pitching the Bruins past No. 17 Pepperdine, 7-2, in Malibu, Calif. The former standout pitcher at Hart High School (Newhall, Calif.) allowed just two runs and six hits and issued one walk.
Four days later in the rubber game of a Pac-10 series against Arizona, Bauer tossed 5.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory, scattering four hits and totaling four strikeouts and one walk. Bauer entered the game with UCLA trailing, 6-3. The Bruins scored three runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth, and Bauer shut down the visiting Wildcats to help UCLA earn its third consecutive series victory.
Bauer has lowered his season ERA to a 2.06 mark, compiling a 3-3 record with 37 strikeouts and 12 walks in a team-high 39.1 innings. Opponents have hit Bauer at a .220 clip. Bauer's 2.06 ERA ranks fifth lowest in the conference, and his 37 strikeouts is tied for sixth. In his two starts this season, Bauer has gone 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA and .174 opponent batting average, collecting 12 strikeouts in 14.0 innings.
Bauer's selection as Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week marks the third consecutive week in which a UCLA player was selected the Pac-10 Player or Pitcher of the Week. Senior infielder Cody Decker claimed the conference's Player of the Week honors March 17, after belting three homers and totaling eight RBI in three games at East Carolina. Junior infielder Casey Haerther earned Player of the Week honors March 24, having totaled two home runs and eight RBI in a Pac-10 series victory at USC.
UCLA returns to action against Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, April 1. Game time at UCLA's Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. Admission costs seven dollars for adults and five dollars for children.
