Gymnasts Reach Ohio; Look Forward to Regionals

April 3, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8 Oregon State gymnastics team arrived at Ohio State Thursday afternoon following a long day of travel that began with a 6:10 a.m. flight from Portland to Chicago. After a short layover at O’Hare, with just enough time to grab breakfast/lunch, the Beavers made the 45-minute hop to Columbus.

This morning several members of the travel party including gymnasts Mandi Rodriguez, Adonica Glatt and D’Anna Piro, made their way over to the university for a tour of the Buckeyes’ athletic facilities. With Ohio State event manager Ericka Hoon guiding us, we toured “The Shoe” (Ohio Stadium), the Steelwood Training Facility, which houses Ohio State Gymnastics (as well as the wrestling and fencing programs), and the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. While touring, the Oregon State contingent bumped into Dick Tressel (Ohio State running backs coach), who stopped to visit with the Beavers. Tressel kindly wished the gymnasts luck and told of his experiences with gymnastics as an undergrad student.

Oregon State and Kentucky participated in the first practice session this afternoon. LSU was originally scheduled to practice with the Beavers, but travel delays prevented the Tigers from reaching Columbus until noon today. LSU, Ohio State, Kent State and Michigan State practiced immediately following the Beavers’ session. Today’s workout was smooth with no snags and lots of well-executed gymnastics.

It appears to the untrained eye that the Beavers are ready for business and should compete well tomorrow.
