No. 8 Stanford Shocked By No. 20 Arizona

April 3, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Stanford men's tennis team was shocked today in Pac-10 play, falling 4-2 to No. 20 Arizona in Tucson this afternoon. Freshman Ryan Thacher and senior Blake Muller provided the only two victories a match that now puts the Cardinal at 0-3 in conference play and 13-5 overall.

The Wildcats went up 2-0 with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but Thacher made it 2-1 by defeating Andres Arango, 7-6(5), 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

With No. 22 sophomore Alex Clayton not in the lineup, No. 50 freshman Bradley Klahn assumed the top-spot for the Cardinal for the second dual match in a row. Klahn suffered his first defeat since Feb. 20, breaking his 10-match win streak as Arizona's No. 68 Jay Goldman was able to best him in two sets, 7-6(5), 6-4, to put Arizona up 3-1.

The Wildcats' Andres Carrasco upset No. 102 Richard Wire at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to complete the victory, and Muller won by default as he was up 4-6, 6-2, 4-3 on Ravid Hazi at No. 4 singles.

Doubles was not played due to inclement weather. The Cardinal returns home for a home double-header with the women against Fresno State on Tuesday, April 7. The men will play first, beginning at 2 p.m.
