Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team battled to a 2-2 tie through five innings but fell to No. 2 Stanford on a pair of late runs in the top of the seventh on Friday afternoon.

Oregon State (16-17, 1-4 Pac-10) tallied four hits, led by sophomore Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.), who went 1-for-1 with a run and a walk.

“I thought it was a hard fought Pac-10 game,” head coach Kirk Walker said. “They had some timely hitting, and we left a couple runners in scoring position that we shouldn’t have.”

The Beavers jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second after Roderfeld led off the inning with a single. Roderfeld advanced to second on a passed ball before senior DeAnn Young (Camarillo, Calif.) ripped an RBI-single to left center.

Stanford (32-2, 3-1 Pac-10) tied things up in the next half inning on an Ashley Hansen RBI-single to right field before picking up another run in the top of the fifth on a Shannon Koplitz single to score Hansen.

But the Beavers answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff walk by freshman Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.). Pinch running for Brenner, sophomore McKenna Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) reached second safely on a sacrifice bunt by junior Alana Ford (Chula Vista, Calif.) before reaching third on a throwing error by Koplitz to put runners on the corners. Sophomore Erin Guzy (Beaverton, Ore.) tallied the RBI on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie things at two all.

Stanford scored their final two runs behind four hits in the top of the seventh with the Beavers unable to answer in the bottom of the inning.

Freshman Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) fanned a career-high six batters, scattering eight hits and throwing the complete game. She was charged with the loss, making her record 9-6.

Stanford’s Hansen went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, while pitcher Missy Penna threw the complete game to earn her 22nd win.
