April 4, 2009

The UCLA men's golf team will compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championship this weekend at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.

The 15-team field features eight of the nation's Top 10 ranked teams, including the first seven. Top-ranked Georgia, No.2 Oklahoma State and third-ranked USC headline the field. The Bruins are ranked 32nd this week.

Head Coach Derek Freeman announced a lineup of senior Erik Flores, sophomores Philip Francis and Connor Driscoll and freshmen Gregor Main and Mauricio Azcue.

'We are excited to get back out there and compete,' said Freeman. 'We showed improvement at our last tournament. It will be good to have Mauricio [Azcue] in the lineup.'

The Bruins placed third in the Collegiate Match Play Championship, a tiebreaker away from advancing to the final match. In the stroke play qualifier, they vaulted from last place to fifth to earn a spot in the championship draw with a second round score of 284 (E).

At the match play event, Main was 2-0-1, while Flores, Francis and Driscoll split their three matches.

The three-day, 54-hole event begins on Sun., Apr. 5 at 11 a.m. with groups starting off the first and 10th holes. The 7,017-yard Riverside Course will play to a par of 72.
