CORVALLIS, ORE. -
The No. 12 California Golden Bears fell victim to a three-run seventh inning Oregon State rally to fall 5-4 in Corvallis Saturday afternoon. Vernae Sevilla hit her fifth home run of the season for the Bears.
The Bears (25-11, 2-3 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when junior Vernae Sevilla knocked a one-out home run out down the left field line.
Junior Bernice Masaniai led off the Bears' fourth with an infield single to third. After advancing to second on a wild pitch and taking third on a pass ball, Masaniai put the Bears up 2-0, scoring on a sac fly by freshman Elia Reid.
Oregon State scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, pulling within a run 3-2. The Bears countered in the next half inning. A leadoff double by Jamia Reid translated into a run one batter later when Elia Reid singled up the middle to drive her in.
Pitcher Valeri Arioto took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. After giving up back-to-back singles to start the inning, she induced a four out for the first out of the inning before a bases-clearing triple tied the game. A single to left by the OSU designated player gave the Beavers the comeback 5-4 victory, handing the Bears their second straight loss.
Arioto took the loss, pitching the complete game 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs, of which three were earned, walking two and striking out six. Her record falls to 10-3 on the season.
For the hitters, Sevilla went 2-for-3 with a single run driven in on her home run in the second inning. Leomiti also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a run driven in. Elia Reid was 1-for-2, driving in two runs.
Cal finishes off the weekend with one more game against the Oregon State Beavers, Sunday at 12 p.m. in Corvalis. Live stats will be available on gametracker for the game.
