Pries and Storen Pitch Stanford to 3-1 Win at Oregon
April 4, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. - Freshman right-hander Jordan Pries worked 7.2-excellent innings, Drew Storen retired all four batters faced and Joey August hammered a solo home run as Stanford (10-12, 4-4 Pac-10) posted a 3-1 victory over host Oregon (12-16, 2-3) this afternoon in a Pac-10 Conference game at PK Park. With the series-evening victory, Stanford has won four of its last five games and six of its last eight contests.
Pries (3-0) continued his sensational freshman campaign, lowering his ERA to 3.86 after allowing Oregon just one run on five hits and a walk over his 7.2 innings of work. Making his third Pac-10 start (fourth overall), the collegiate rookie carried a shutout into the eighth and established a career high with seven strikeouts. Stanford has won three of Pries' four starts - including a pair of road outings that have evened a Pac-10 weekend series.
With a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the eighth, Pries faltered ever so slightly. He fanned a pair of hitters, but yielded three singles - including a two-out, RBI-hit by Danny Pulfer that ended the shutout bid. Stanford turned to its closer with the tying runners on base, and Storen responded by inducing an inning-ending groundout. Storen then slammed the door shut on his second save with a perfect ninth, punctuating the frame with consecutive strikeouts to end the contest - his 25th and 26th in just 13.2 innings this season.
Stanford scored all the runs it would need in the third, pushing two across against Oregon starter Erik Stavert (3-2). Jake Schlander drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Gaylord and advanced to third on a groundout by Colin Walsh. With August batting, Stavert uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Schlander to score easily. Two pitches later, August belted his fourth home run of the year - all of which have come in the last seven games.
The Cardinal returned to small ball to plate its final run in the eighth. Gaylord led off with a single, and Walsh sacrificed him to second. August then hit a slow roller to the third base side of the mound that resulted in a run when Oregon reliever Ryan Fleckenstein, in his haste to record an out, threw the ball down the right field line for an error that allowed Gaylord to score.
Toby Gerhart was the lone player on either club with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. The Cardinal left fielder also stole a pair of bases for his career multi-steal contest.
Stanford and Oregon will square off in the rubber game of this Pac-10 weekend series tomorrow afternoon, with Cardinal left-hander Brett Mooneyham (1-1, 4.19) opposing Ducks right-hander Madison Boer (1-3, 3.68). First pitch from PK Park is set for 1:00 p.m. PT.
