Three Boats Advance to Crew Classic Finals

Three Oregon State women’s crews made a solid showing Saturday in their qualifying heats of the San Diego Crew Classic held at Mission Bay. The Beavers’ three boats finished well to qualify for the grand finals on Sunday.
OSU’s Varsity 8+, ranked No. 18 in the nation, fought hard to overtake Iowa in the last 500 yards for a complete race to finish behind No. 6 Michigan and No. 4 Washington placing third and trailing Washington by a mere 2.31 seconds.
The Second Varsity 8+ also raced well earning a second place finish trailing only Wisconsin by only 1.81 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Novice 8+ won its heat leaving an impression on the competition leading throughout the entire race and finishing more than 18-seconds ahead of second place USC.
Sunday’s grand finals for the Beavers begin at 9:15 a.m. when the V8+ returns to the water in the final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup against a competitive field that includes rematches with Michigan and Washington as well as No. 12 Washington State.
The 2V8+ is set to race at 10 a.m. in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy final against Washington, Michigan and Wisconsin among others. The N8+ finishes racing for the Beavers Sunday 11 a.m. in the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy final against Pacific Northwest rivals Washington and Washington State.
