No. 3 Washington Walks-Off With 3-2 Win Over No. 4 Softball
April 5, 2009
SEATTLE, Wash. – A traditional Pac-10 pitching match-up met the Sun Devils Sunday afternoon as the third-ranked Washington Huskies were just able to squeak away with a walk-off 3-2 win in Seattle at Husky Softball Complex. The loss drops ASU to 32-7 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10 while Washington now holds at 31-5 and 3-3 in conference play.
The Huskies struck early in the game as the first inning started with a lead-off walk that cost the Sun Devils in the end as Danielle Lawrie stepped in again to help her own cause by sneaking the first pitch she saw up the left line for an RBI single.
ASU wasn’t about to go quietly in this game though as they came back in the fourth to take the lead as Lesley Rogers hit a single which was later plated by an RBI double from Katelyn Boyd, who was brought home as well by an RBI single from Kaylyn Castillo.
A double from Ashley Charters in the fifth for UW started the rally as she was later brought home on a fielder’s choice to tie the game up at two apiece, after which Danielle Lawrie stepped in to shine through the remainder of the game as she flummoxed the ASU hitters, keeping them off the board through seven.
Looking to push the game into extras, Hillary Bach took to the circle in the bottom of the seventh where she collected an out before lead-off hitter, Ashley Charters crushed a 2-0 pitch deep to right center to put the nail in the coffin for the Sun Devils.
Up next, the Sun Devils head home to host UNLV in a double-header on Tuesday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. before heading south for the weekend to kick-off the Duel in the Desert against in-state rivals Arizona.
