Novice Boat Shines In Crew Classic Final
April 5, 2009
SAN Diego, Caif. - Three Oregon State boats competed in the Grand Finals of the San Diego Crew Classic held in Mission Bay, California Sunday.
The Novice 8+ rowed a strong race to finish second in the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy final against Pac-10 foes Washington, Washington State, USC and UCLA. Putting together a complete race, the Beavers finished only 1.66 seconds behind Washington after a battle to the finish line.
'It was a good weekend of racing for us,' said head coach Emily Ford. 'We got some great races under our belt and learned a lot about where we are and where to go from here. The race of the day was definitely the novice 8+. They showed great composure, especially considering there are seven young women in that boat that have never rowed before. We look forward to returning to Corvallis and getting back to work.'
The 18th-ranked Varsity 8+ crew competed in the Jessop-Whittier Cup final where it once again faced No. 6 Michigan and No. 4 Washington. The boat started with a lead over No. 12 Washington State that turned into a battle for fifth place, with the Beavers pulling ahead at the end.
The Second Varsity 8+ faced Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, USC and Notre Dame to place sixth in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy Final crossing the finish line only 2.45-seconds behind Notre Dame in sixth place.
The Beavers are set to return to the water in their next race on April 18 at the Columbus Invitational in Ohio.
