Josh Spence Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
April 6, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State junior LHP Josh Spence has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today. It is the first weekly honor for Spence and the fourth time this season a Sun Devil has won a weekly award from the Pac-10. Jason Kipnis was named Player of the Week opening weekend, and Mike Leake was named Pitcher of the Week twice in the month of March. This marks the 54th time a Sun Devil has been named Pitcher of the Week.
Spence had a remarkable week for the Sun Devils as he earned a win and a save. On Apr. 1, the Victoria, Australia, native came out of the bullpen to pitch the final two innings of the Sun Devils' 3-1 victory over No. 1 Cal State Fullerton. He only allowed one hit, while striking out two batters to earn the save. The lefty picked up the win at Washington on Apr. 4, improving his record to 6-0 on the season. He pitched eight innings, striking out a career-high 14 batters without allowing an earned run. Spence leads the Pac-10 with a 1.17 ERA and 72 strikeouts.
The Sun Devils are in Fayetteville, Arkansas this week for a two-game mid-week series with the Razorbacks that gets underway on Tuesday.
