WSU in Second at Stevinson Invite

STEVINSON, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team was led by sophomore Nick Ellis and freshman Trent Sanders after two rounds today at the par-72, 7,142-yard Stevinson Ranch Golf Club, Monday. The Cougars posted a team score of 580 (+4), one stroke back of host school Colorado, who currently sits in first place.
'The first time we've had nice weather at a tournament this spring!' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.
Ellis and Sanders each finished the first day in a tie for fourth place, after posting two-round scores of 143 (-1).
Junior Austin Hurt enters the final day in a tie for 11th place. Hurt shot a 77 (+5) in the first round and then fired a 68 (-4) in the second round to card a two-round score of 145 (+1), only two strokes back of the top five.
Freshman Paul Mitzel finished day one only two strokes out of the top 25. Mitzel carded 77 (+5) in the first round and a 73 (+1) in the second round for a two-round score of 150 (+6).
Wrapping up the Cougar scorers are junior Kevin Tucker and sophomore Xavier Dailly. Tucker posted a two-round score of 153 (+9). Dailly competed as an individual and shot a 73 (+1) in the first round and a 78 (+6) in the second round and enters the final round only three strokes out of the top 25.
The Cougars posted a combined score of 269 in the first round and 284 in the second round to enter the final day in a tie for second place.
'We played very well and shot the lowest score of the tournament this afternoon,' said Williams. 'Ellis, Sanders and Hurt had solid days and we are right in the thick of this shootout. Tomorrow should be a lot of fun!'
