Cougar Baseball Completes Sweep of BYU
April 7, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Jared Prince and redshirt-sophomore Cody Bartlett each drove in three runs to lead Washington State to a 13-4 victory over BYU in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Tuesday.
With the victory, Washington State (14-13) completed a two-game sweep over BYU (18-12) and moved above .500 for the first time this season.
'We played well offensively and defensively, and we pitched well tonight,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'It is difficult for some of our guys out of the bullpen who do not have a defined role on the weekend to come in and pitch in the mid-week games, but I thought we handled that tonight.'
Washington State broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run third inning. Sophomore Shea Vucinich led off with a double and senior Alex Burg walked. One out later, Prince launched a three-run home run to left and WSU led 4-1. Freshman Derek Jones, sophomore Matt Argyropoulos and Bartlett followed with consecutive singles to tack on another run.
BYU closed within 5-3 after scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but WSU put the game away with a six-run sixth.
With one out, redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano singled and Vucinich was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a ground out, then scored on a single by senior Greg Lagreid. Prince singled and Jones walked to load the bases before Argyropoulos singled in two runs to make the score 9-3. Bartlett capped the rally with a two-run single.
Washington State opens a three-game series at No. 1 Arizona State, Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano made his first-career start...junior Michael Ratigan picked up his sixth-career win in relief, one shy of the WSU all-time top 10...WSU sent six-straight pinch hitters to the plate in the seventh inning and used 23 of the 35 men on its roster...game attendance was 615, the most for a mid-week home game since May 1, 2002 against Gonzaga (620).
