LOS ANGELES - Junior shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Cal State Northridge Matadors, 8-7, in a nonconference game at Dedeaux Field.
Anthony Vasquez was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI for the Trojans (14-14) while Robert Stock had two hits as well. Vasquez also came into the game in the eighth as a pitcher and threw two innings to earn his first save of the season, allowing a run on two hits. Ryan Cabral threw three innings in relief for his first win of the year, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
TS Reed led the Matadors (13-18) with a 3-for-6 day.
John Parham reached safely in the first for the Matadors with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Pineda walked and Dominic D'Anna singled to center for the 1-0 lead. Mike O'Neill and Green hit back-to-back triples in the bottom of the first for USC's first run. Vasquez singled to center to score Green and later scored on Ricky Oropesa's RBI single for the 3-1 lead.
TS Reed cut the deficit to one with an RBI single in the second, but the Trojans came back with two more runs. Alex Sherrod laced a one-out double down the third base line and a walk to Joe De Pinto put runners at first and second. Green and Vasquez then provided back-to-back RBI singles as USC led, 5-2.
In the fourth, Richard Cates singled home TS Reed and Jason Dabbs made it a 5-4 score with an RBI sacrifice fly to center. Two more USC errors led to another run for Cal State Northridge in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
Billy Pinkerton broke the tie in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-run homer to left center, his first of the season. Green recorded his third RBI of the night with a single in the seventh to give USC a three-run cushion.
The Matadors came back with two runs in the eighth. Reed and Parham both singled to knock out Cabral, but Vasquez came in and got Cates to ground into the 6-4-3 double play. Todd Eskelin then hit a pinch-hit double and later scored on a single by Jason Dabbs. With the tying run at second, Vasquez got pinch hitter Billy Swanson to fly out for the final out of the inning. Vasquez then retired the side in the ninth to secure the win.

Notes: Grant Green and Anthony Vasquez both extended their hitting streaks to eight games...Green is batting .514 in the streak (18-for-35) while Vasquez is batting .429 (15-for-35) during his streak...Green recorded his 18th career triple and needs one more to break into the Pac-10 Conference top ten list.
