Breaking It Down With Bailey
April 8, 2009
NOW THAT IS HOW WE WANT THIS SEASON TO GO!
A sweep of the Arizonas?!?! AT HOME!!?! In SUNNY, amazing, BEAUTIFUL Seattle weather?! At a packed Husky Stadium!?!?
Now, that's what I'm talkin' about.
We played Husky softball this weekend. The nine girls on the field for the Dawgs this weekend got it done and then some. But the two who stuck out the most definitely got their recognition. SWEEPING THE PAC-10 AWARDS?! Goodness gracious, I have some amazing teammates.
First of all, Thursday's practice was just brutal. It was pouring a steady stream for about ¾ of practice until finally the sky's opened up and said 'Okay, that's enough batting practice for the day' and dumped on us. Just wet, nasty, depressing rain. So we rolled out the tarp, a task that comes much too easily by now, and prayed that the rain would keep away for the weekend. I always wonder what the other team is thinking Thursday night when the rain is just pounding on the hotel windows... 'I hate Washington' probably. What an advantage.
But Friday morning finally arrived and oh my gosh, SUN! I couldn't get over how beautiful it was! It was a bit chilly, but dry none-the-less! We showed up to the field, blasted the new warm-up mix I put together (trying to make everyone happy by putting quite the variety on there) and got to warm up outside for a change!! All of us were singing and laughing and having such a great time! It was seriously fun. But the best part about that day was the 6-0 win over the Wildcats. Danielle's no-no was such a sight to see. She just shut that offense down! They couldn't figure out what to do! Defense helped her out a bit with some nice snags in the outfield, but she did such a great job! Golden arm came through in the clutch.
Saturday, our house was PACKED. Sold out. Standing-room only. The sun was beating down on our field, sharing some of its rays with the football team which was scrimmaging next door (they were probably pretty pumped up by our warm-up music...comprised of everything from Jordin Sparks and The Dream to Michael Jackson and Kenny Chesney). Five innings later, we sent Arizona State back to their hotel with their first Pac-10 loss of the year by run ruling them and winning 11-3.
Saturday was also awesome because we were celebrating the life of our long-time friend Marlin Binger. Marlin passed away earlier this season and has always been an amazing and important part of our program's history. He has been a fan since the inaugural season in 1993 and knew every single girl to ever come through our program. In his honor, the board room was renamed the 'Binger Board Room' so he will forever have a place (literally) in Husky Softball Stadium.
Sunday was one ridiculous game. First of all Ashley Charters is a freakin' stud. Unstoppable. And humble at that!! But anyway, it was so cool to see everyone step it up all weekend, but for some reason, when we came to the bottom of the 7th inning tied 2-all, I knew Charters was gonna get it done. Everyone knew it. She was going to swing for the fences. Our team isn't the type of team to pass the bat. We want to win the game. And that's just what she did. She took a 2-0 pitch deep, and I mean DEEEEEEP to right center onto the football practice field and everyone erupted into cheers. I called it by the way. But yeah, she just hit the cover off of it.
Overall, I'd say we did what we wanted to do this weekend. I'm really proud of the way we played and how we came out after a tough weekend in the Bay Area and capitalized on being at home and came out on top against two historically good Arizona teams, which apparently were the #1 and #2 offenses in the nation. Props to Danielle and Alicia Blake (who calls the games) for being able to baffle the heck out of them.
Thanks to our friends, family and fans that came out to support us this weekend. Keep coming out and showing us some love, we completely appreciate your support!

I don't know who said it, but my grandpa wrote that on a scrap piece of paper and stuck it in my car one time when I was in high school and I have it taped next to my mirror, it's a good one!
Stay classy and GO TEAM PURP!
