Cal Looks for More Success at Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational

California heads to Southern California this week for the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational from Friday, April 10, to Saturday, April 11, in Los Angeles, Calif. The Invitational kicks off with the women's discus at 12 p.m. The running events begin at 2 p.m. with the women's 100-meter hurdles. Last weekend, although Cal only added two NCAA regional qualifiers it had multiple strong performances. The Cal men are currently ranked No. 22 in the USTFCCCA rankings.
Last Time Out: Sacramento State Elite Meet
Last Saturday at the Sacramento State Elite Meet, Cal won 11 events, earned two new NCAA regional qualifiers and had a number of strong performances. Seniors Katie Morgan and Evelyn Smith were the two new regional qualifiers in the pole vault and the 400-meter hurdles, respectively.
Senior Kellan Patterson, and sophomores Cherrelle Garrett and Patrick Kowalsky were named the Athletes of the Meet. For the second straight competition, Garrett won both the 100 and the 200 meters, clocking an 11.69 in the 100 and a 24.03 in the 200. Patterson took top honors in the 100 with his time of 10.61 and second in the 200 (21.84). Kowalsky finished first in both the shot put and the discus. His mark in the shot put was 53-8.25 (16.36m) and his personal-best mark in the discus was 158-00 (48.15m).
Some of the featured athletes for the Bears this weekend will be defending NCAA champion Katie Morgan in the pole vault, sophomore Allison Stokke in the pole vault, All-American Inika McPherson in the high jump, senior Jordan Paul in the 110-meter hurdles, senior Martin Maric in the discus and the javelin, and Cherrelle Garrett will go for her third consecutive meet in winning the 100 and the 200.
Brutus Hamilton Invitational - NYRR Distance Invitational
At the 2009 Brutus Hamilton Invitational from April 24-25, Edwards Stadium will go under the lights for the New York Road Runners Distance Invitational on April 24. Sixteen Olympians will be participating, including 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials 1500-meter champion Shannon Rowbury, two-time Olympic steeplechaser Anthony Famiglietti, and 2008 U.S. 10,000-meter Olympian Jorge Torres.
An international field of athletes will be attempting to achieve qualifying times at 5000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the 3000-meter steeplechase for the IAAF World Championships later this summer in Berlin. In partnering with Cal to host the NYRR Distance Carnival, NYRR will arrange pacemakers for the seeded heats of the men's and women's 5000- and 10,000-meter races.
NCAA Regional Qualifiers
Cal currently boasts 21 NCAA regional qualifiers, 12 on the women's team and nine on the men's team. The regional qualifiers are - Brook Turner (400), Cherrelle Garret (100, 200), Debra Maier (5000), the women's 4x100 and 4x400, Allison Stokke (Pole Vault), Inika McPherson (High Jump), Kristen Meister (High Jump), Artensia Young (Triple Jump), Katie Morgan (Pole Vault), Evelyn Smith (400-H), Kellan Patterson (100), Jordan Paul (110-H), Jake Hanson (400-H), Francis Gadayan (800), Yosef Ghebray (10,000), Martin Maric (Discus), Patrick Kowalsky (Shot Put), Ryan Shuler (Pole Vault), Ryan Young (Javelin).
Cal renews its rivalry with the Stanford in the 115th Big Meet on Saturday, April 18, at Stanford. The Cardinal men and women both won last year in Berkeley.
