Women's Soccer Hosts US U-23 National Team on Tuesday

April 8, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team returns to action early next week as the Beavers will host the U-23 United States Women's National Team on Tuesday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. Admittance to the special exhibition match is free; however, fans are encouraged to 'Help Fight Hunger' by bringing a canned food item to donate to Community Outreach.

The exhibition match with the national squad marks the first time a women's US national team has made an appearance at Paul Lorenz Field.

'Hosting the national team is a terrific opportunity and I know the team is extremely excited to have the chance to play against some of the best players in the world,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'It's a great honor to have them come to Corvallis. It should be a tremendous learning experience and a great chance for fans to see some of the best young players in the world.'

The U-23 national squad is in Oregon training for a Europe tour later this year as the squad recently captured its second consecutive Nordic Cup title in 2008 and its 10th in the last 12 years.

The U-23 national squad is the main source for future full national team players as the majority of the current player pool has been funneled through the U-20/U-23 program.

This is the first year that the U.S. U-23 roster features a majority of professional players with 11 of the 18 having been drafted by clubs in the new WPS.

Oregon State, which opened spring practice following OSU's spring break, returns 10 starters from last year's squad that finished with a record of 6-11-2 on the season.
