Huskies Jump All Over Aztecs In 7-0 Rout
April 10, 2009
SAN DIEGO - Washington's women's tennis team played the spoiler role today, hammering 42nd-ranked San Diego State on the Aztecs' Senior Day at the Aztec Tennis Center. The 35th-ranked Huskies did not drop a set in singles in improving to 12-1 against non-conference opponents.
After securing the doubles point, Washington took care of business on the singles courts. Freshman Samantha Smith was the first Husky off court, rolling over Roxanne Ellison, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to earn her 20th victory of the season.
24th-ranked sophomore Venise Chan continues to expand her career-high in singles wins, as she overcame Holly Bagshaw, 6-4, 6-3 in the top spot to improve to 24-5 and 17-3 in dual play. Chan has won seven-straight singles matches and her win today put the Huskies up 3-0.
Freshman Denise Dy got the clincher at No. 2 singles, as she snapped a three-match losing skid with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Julia Trunk. Dy had been under the weather last week against the L.A. schools and had to retire in her previous match, but showed that she was back feeling strong today in earning her 20th win.
'We knew that this would be a test of our mental focus, because they were playing with a lot of emotion after honoring their seniors,' said assistant coach Damon Coupe. 'We were able to tune it all out and get the job done.'
The Huskies' win parade continued with juniors Joyce Ardies and Aleksandra Malovic each winning at fifth and sixth singles. Ardies won at No. 5 over Milana Yusupov, 6-4, 7-5, and Malovic beat Olivia Colman at No. 6, 6-0, 6-4.
Sophomore Lina Xu completed the sweep at third singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (8) victory over Esther Cadua. The win was her first since March 6, but continued a trend of improved play that included two tight losses to the Bruins and Trojans last week.
Doubles play was headlined by the continued stellar play of Ardies and Dy at the No. 1 spot. They showed why it's only a matter of time before they break into the doubles rankings, as they had little difficulty beating the 58th-ranked tandem of Bagshaw and Trunk, 8-2. The two are 6-1 since first teaming up on March 13 including a win over the 2nd-ranked team from UCLA. Smith and Xu clinched the doubles point in the third position, 8-4, over Cadua and Cioffi.
Washington will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against the University of San Diego, then will be back home to close out their regular season against Washington State and Oregon next weekend.
