April 10, 2009
TEMPE - The 30th Sun Angel Track Classic presented by Coca-Cola opened on Friday afternoon with the hammer competition and two members of the Arizona State University track and field program recorded big marks to start the team off on the right foot at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. Both Jason Lewis and Sarah Stevens met NCAA regional qualifying standards with their tosses to lead the way for the Sun Devils.
In the men's competition, Lewis finished second overall with a toss of 68.15m (223-07), which moved him up two spots on the ASU all-time Top 10 list to No. 2 overall. His top mark was bettered his previous personal-best of 61.65m (202-03), improving his best by over 21 feet. In fact, four of his five fair throws were better than his previous personal-best toss heading into the meet.
On the women's side, Stevens took part in the women's invitational competition and placed fourth overall with a toss of 64.87m (212-10). Her mark was the top throw among collegiate competitors in both events (open and invitational) and was a five-foot improvement on her season-best throw.
The Classic continues on Saturday with all other events being contested. The men's discus opens the day at 10 a.m. with many of the field events beginning after that. The running events start at 2:20 p.m. with the premiere races and field events starting at 6 p.m.
