Masteron Breaks School Record 1,500m; Becomes Regional Qualifier
April 11, 2009
DAVIS, Calif. – Leading the Oregon State women’s track team was freshman Casey Masterson becoming a regional qualifier in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:26.85 Saturday, at the Woody Wilson Open.
Surpassing the regional qualifying mark of 4:27.80, Masterson (Eugene, Ore.) broke fellow teammate Sylvia Veal’s school record in the 1,500-meters with her third place finish in the 14-runner first section.
“Casey ran a great race in a very competitive field,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “The top four women ran really hard. Her pace was perfect. The hope this weekend was to get a regional qualifying time and we did just that.”
Veal (Aloha, Ore.), running unattached in the 1,500-meters, recorded a personal best in a fourth place finish with a time of 4:27.05 at Woody Wilson Track.
“Sylvia also did a great job in the 1,500-meters,” Sullivan said. “She is doing a great job this year.”
Running in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.) finished sixth. Her time of 11:27.95 marks the fifth best time in Oregon State history.
“I was really pleased with how well Hannah ran today in the steeple,” Sullivan said. “Running 14 seconds faster than her first time out was just tremendous.”
Graduate student Michelle Childs won section-2 of the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:47.76.
“It was really good to see so many PRs by many of our runners today,” Sullivan said. “It was particularly good to see Krista PR, because she had missed nearly a year of running.”
Freshman Melissa Kauffman started the racing off for the Beavers in the morning with a personal best time of 18:44.72 in the B-section of the 5,000-meters.
“Overall, we had a lot of women run a lot of great races,” Sullivan said. “Many of our athletes have missed a lot of time this year. Having them run so well today makes this trip very satisfying.”
