Track Unveils 2009-10 Signing Class

The Wildcats inked 15 athletes to join the men's and women's track and field teams, a class distinguished by outstanding high jumpers and distance runners.  Here is a preview of those athletes:

Donovant Grant (Mountain View High School, Marana, Ariz.) – An accomplished high school jumper who split time with basketball at his high school…Won the 2009 Arizona Willie Williams Classic with his personal best of 44-6 ½” in the triple jump…Has personal bests of 6-6 in the high jump and 23-6 ¼” in the long jump, a mark he set winning the 2008 Region 5A-II Arizona High School State Championships…

 

Edgar Rivera-Morales (Agua Prieta High School, Agua Prieta, Mexico) – Another skilled high school jumpers…Had personal bests of 7-1 ¾” in the high jump and 48-0” in the triple jump as a junior…His high jump mark would have ranked him as the 3rd best US high school mark in 2008…Also the brother of accomplished current UA long jumper Luis Rivera-Morales…

 

Nick Ross (Vista Murrieta High School, Murrieta, Calif.) – Arguably the best high jumper in the nation, clearing 7-2 ¾” just this season, the leading jump in the country…Was a 7-footer his junior year…Gives the UA their second 7-footer of the 2009 recruiting class…Video of Ross' Nation Leading High Jump...

 

Lauren Smith (Brazosport High School, Lake Jackson, Tex.) – Two-time All-State Region 5A first team cross country athlete in 2007 and 2008…Also a two-time Footlocker Finalist finishing 17th in 2007 and 23rd in 2008…Has best times of 17:27 in the 5000-meters, 10:48 in the 3200-meters and 5:02 in the 1600-meters…

 

Jennifer Bergman (Valley Christian High School, San Jose, Calif.) – Finished third at the California Interscholastic Federation Cross Country Championships…Also a 2008 Footlocker Finalist where she finished 33rd…Finished 6th at the 2008 Footlocker West Meet…Has bests of 17:43 in the 5000-meters and 10:53 in the 3200-meters…

 

Megan Meyer (Tesoro High School, Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) – Another strong distance runner…Has personal bests of 17:45 in the 5000-meters, 10:44 in the 3200-meters and 4:58 in the 1600-meters…

 

Chloe Allen  (Clovis West High School, Fresno, Calif.) – Finished 14th in the California State Meet in the 3200-meters…A 4-year letter winner in track and soccer…Has personal bests of 11:00 in the 3200-meters, 5:04 in the 1600-meters and 2:17 in the 800-meters…

 

Melanie McGrath (Catalina High School, Tucson, Ariz.) – Finished fifth place at the 2008 Arizona 4A-II Cross Country Championships and sixth place at the 2008 Peaks Invitational…Has personal bests of 11:41 in the 3200-meters, 5:04 in the 1600-meters and 2:19 in the 800-meters…

 

Elizabeth Apgar (Lincoln High School, San Diego, CA) – Finished third at the 2008 Division II California State Cross Country Championship and fifth place in the same meet in 2007…A strong distance runner with great leg speed that makes her dangerous in the middle distance events…Has a personal best of 2:12:71 in the 800-meters…

 

Brigetta Barrett (Duncanville HS, TX) Ranked the second best high school jumper in the nation in 2008 with a personal best jump of 6-0” at the Goldenwest Invitational…Also the 2008 Texas State high jump champion…Currently ranked as the top high school jumper of 2009…

 

Lisa Egarter (Austria) - Scored 5195 at the prestigious Gotziz Invitational in May of 2008, a score would have made her the second-ranked high school heptathlete in the United States…A very solid jumper and thrower…Finished 23rd in the heptathlon in the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships…

 

The Wildcats also signed Cami Jackson (distance) and Alysa Hasslen (throws) for the women and Noe Ramirez and Rory McLoed (distance) for the men’s side.
