Diamond Dawgs Travel To Face Bruins
April 14, 2009
THIS WEEK: The Washington baseball team (14-19 overall, 3-5 in the Pac-10), currently on a season-long four-game winning streak, takes a brief respite this week before traveling to Los Angeles for a three-game, Pac-10 series vs. UCLA (13-19 overall, 6-6 in the Pac-10) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. After having played 18 games over the previous 23 days, the Huskies had five straight days off before Friday's game against the Bruins. Prior to that break, the Huskies had broke a six-game losing streak by winning its last four in a row -- one at Gonzaga and a three-game sweep of California in Seattle. This weekend's series opener is Friday at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's game two begins at 2:00 p.m. and the series finale is Sunday at 1:00 p.m. All three UW-UCLA games will air live on KKNW AM-1150. Fans outside of the listening area can catch a live stream on-line, for free, via gohuskies.com. Washington will send freshman right-hander Aaron West to the mound to start Friday's game. On Saturday, senior RHP Jason Erickson will go for the Dawgs and Andrew Kittredge, a freshman RHP, will make the start on Saturday. Next up after this weekend is a home game next Tuesday, April 21, vs. Portland, followed by a three-game series at Oregon, the Huskies' first visit to Eugene since the final weekend of the 1981 regular season, after which the Ducks dropped baseball. Here's a look at this weekend's action:
Fri., April 17: UW at UCLA, 6:00 p.m. - Radio: KKNW AM-1150
Sat., April 18: UW at UCLA, 2:00 p.m. - Radio: KKNW AM-1150
Sun., April 19: UW at UCLA, 1:00 p.m. - Radio: KKNW AM-1150
COACH 'K': In 2004, Husky baseball coach Ken Knutson became the winningest baseball coach in the history of the program. In 2007, he became only the 17th coach in Pac-10 history to reach 500 career wins. Last year, he became the winningest coach in any sport in UW history. Those are just a few of the many accomplishments on Knutson's impressive resume. In his 16-plus seasons at the helm of his alma mater's baseball team, Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles and six NCAA Regionals. His career record now stands at 573-388-2 (.596). Before becoming the head man in 1993, Knutson served as the UW pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his staff led the NCAA with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 296-136-2 (.684) record in home games. He is 231-180 (.562) in Pac-10 games. He's coached 55 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 16 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Tighe Dickinson, Kevin Miller and Josh Scofield.
Huskies Back At Safeco Field: Washington will return to Safeco Field for the third consecutive season this year. However, this time, the Dawgs will play two games at the home of the Seattle Mariners. The UW played Arizona State April 3 at Safeco, and will play Oregon State there on May 8. The OSU game starts at 6:30 p.m. and is the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series. Two seasons ago, the Huskies beat No. 8 OSU, 6-2, in their first-ever game at Safeco. Attendance was 10,421, still a league record for a conference game. Last year, the Huskies edged Arizona, 1-0, on a two-hit, 15-strikeout shutout by Nick Haughian as 5,187 fans watched on. Tickets are $8 and UW students are admitted free.
Squad Breakdown: UW's 35-man roster, like most college baseball rosters, is a bit on the young side this year. Among the 35 players, there are six seniors, six juniors, 11 sophomores and 12 freshmen, meaning that 23 of 35 (66 percent) players are freshmen or sophomores. The squad includes 23 returners and 12 newcomers (all of them freshmen). The UW's returning players have competed in a total of 909 games. Thirteen different veteran position players have combined for 1,951 career at bats while returning pitchers have made 81 career starts and pitched 643.2 innings in a UW uniform.
Washington's Team: The Husky baseball roster has always been dominated by in-state players, as most college baseball rosters are. The squad consistently has about 90 percent of players from the state of Washington. For the second straight season, however, this year's squad consists entirely of student-athletes who played their high school ball in Washington. Not surprisingly, the majority of the team comes from western Washington as 29 of the 35 come from west of the Cascade Mountains. Thirteen players come from King County, the county in which the UW is located, and 27 of 30 come from King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, which, essentially, form the Seattle metropolitan area.
Training Room: Washington lost two veteran players for the season due to Tommy John elbow surgery. Starting second baseman Bradley Boyer and catcher Max Kwan should return in 2010, but aren't on the roster in 2009, thanks to new NCAA roster limits. Additionally, possible starting OF Sean Meehan and possible weekend starter Cam Nobles have yet to play this year due to off-season injuries. More recently, the Huskies have lost C/IF Pierce Rankin, 3B Aaron Russell and DH Ty Rasmussen. Rankin is expected to be out 3-4 weeks, Rasmussen is likely out for th year and Russell's prognosis is still undetermined.
