No. 7 USC Men Win Seventh Straight, Top Hawai'i 4-3

April 14, 2009

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 7 USC men's tennis team rolled out ahead of visiting Hawai'i and tallied the Trojans' seventh straight win with a 4-3 decision over the Warriors on Tuesday at Marks Stadium. Now 19-4 overall, the Trojans have just one final regular-season dual match left to go, and it's a big one. The Pac-10 Championship is on the line on Friday (April 17) when No. 7 USC heads across town to take on No. 9 UCLA at 3 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

USC sewed up the doubles point with a sweep begun by an 8-1 takedown by Abdullah Magdas / Daniel Nguyen at the No. 2 position over Warriors Lajola/Weber. #2 Robert Farah / Steve Johnson pocketed the point with an 8-5 win over Fitch/Rosenberg at No. 1, and Andrew Kells / Jaak Poldma finished the run off with an 8-6 win over Faulk/Heineman at No. 3.

That momentum generated a singles surge that carried the Trojans quickly to victory. USC pinned up three straight singles wins to clinch the match early before the remaining matches went to 10-game tiebreaks in the third. Pushing USC on the path to victory first was freshman Daniel Nguyen, who pounded out a clean 6-0, 6-0 win over Philipp Eberhard at the No. 6 position. #81 Jaak Poldma made it 3-0 USC with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Leo Rosenberg at the No. 2 slot, and Jason McNaughton came through with the clincher from No. 5 soon after. The junior pinned up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jeff Fitch, and USC had its 19th win of the year in-hand.

The Warriors were able to get on the board late in the match by pushing through in tiebreaks. At No. 1, Hawaii's #89 Dennis Lajola fought back and claimed a 4-6, 6-4, (10-4) win over USC's #4 Robert Farah to get the Warriors their first point of the match. At No. 4, Sascha Heinemann made a similar push against USC freshman #63 Steve Johnson to register a 3-6, 7-5, (10-4) win there and make it 4-2. And at the No. 3 slot, USC's #84 Abdullah Magdas rallied to take the second set back in a tiebreak, only to have Andreas Weber get ahead in the 10-point decider as the Warriors made it 4-3 with Weber's 6-2, 6-7 (0), (10-6) win.
