Stephan Gross, Charonda Williams Named ASU Athletes of the Week

April 14, 2009

Stephan Gross (Men's Golf) and Charonda Williams (Track and Field) have been named ASU's Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 18. Both gave outstanding performances in their respective sports over the weekend.

Gross led the way for the ASU `A' squad at the Thunderbird Invitational, shooting an even-par en route to the first individual championship of his short career. His 3-under par 210 (69-70-71) left him tied with Steve Saunders of New Mexico for the victory, while bolstering his 73.24 scoring average, already the lowest on the team. He also led the team to win the tournament overall and now joins the ranks of ASU greats Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey, who won the individual title in their collegiate careers.

Williams had a stellar outing at the 30th Sun Angel Track Classic as she posted two of the faster times in the nation so far this season. In the 200m dash, her first of the outdoor season, Williams clocked in at 22.82 to finish second only to 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Kerron Stewart while also breaking the ASU school record of 22.91 (Maicel Malone, 1991) that had stood for 18 years. Later in the evening, Williams competed in her first 100m dash of the season and won the event, running 11.44, which is just 0.03 off her personal best. Between those two races, she anchored the 4x100m relay to a second-place showing with a time of 44.38, making her a part of three regional qualifying marks on the day.
