Kevin Rhoderick Named To Stopper Of The Year Midseason Watch List
April 16, 2009
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Oregon State sophomore closer Kevin Rhoderick has been named to the Stopper Of The Year Midseason Watch List, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced on Thursday.
Rhoderick, from Scottsdale, Ariz., is one of 42 players named to the watch list for the award, which is given annually to the nation's best collegiate reliever.
The right-hander is 0-1 this year and has five saves in 13 appearances, all in relief. He has 18 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings.
Now in his second year with the Beavers, Rhoderick has 17 career saves, which already places him No. 2 in program history, behind only Kevin Gunderson, who had 37 saves. This season, Rhoderick is attempting to become just the second Oregon State pitcher to collect at least 10 saves in two different seasons. Gunderson was the first to do, saving 14 games in 2005 and 20 in 2006.
The watch list is compiled from nominations from sports information contacts and conference media relations offices. The national saves leader and four other relief pitchers will be selected as finalists on June 3. The winner will be announced before the opening of the College World Series on June 13. Rhoderick is one of three midseason finalists from the Pacific-10 Conference. The others include Arizona's Jason Stoffel and Drew Storen from Stanford.
Rhoderick and the Beavers next play USC in a big three-game series at Goss Stadium this weekend. Friday's series opener starts at 5 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. game on Saturday. Sunday's game now starts at 12 p.m. Please note that only bleacher seats are available for Saturday and Sunday's games.
Also, please be aware that there is a Club volleyball tournament on Saturday and Sunday at legendary Gill Coliseum and other locations around the Oregon State campus. The tournament will have an impact on parking and traffic so please plan accordingly as the area will be much more congested than normal. It is advised that fans come earlier than normal to guarantee being able to see that day's first pitch.
