Cole's 13 Strikeouts Propel UCLA Baseball Past Washington, 4-2
April 17, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Freshman right-hander Gerrit Cole (3-3) tallied a career-high 13 strikeouts in eight innings, allowing just one hit and two unearned runs, to send the UCLA baseball to a 4-2 Pac-10 victory over Washington on Friday evening at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Notching his third win of the season, Cole struck out more hitters than any Bruin since Tim Murphy registered a career-high 14 strikeouts in a 5-4 loss at Arizona State on May 12, 2007.
UCLA (15-19, 7-6 Pac-10) won for the fifth time in its last seven games, scoring one run in the fifth to tie Washington, 2-2, before adding two runs in the sixth. Left-hander Gavin Brooks notched his fourth save of the season, limiting the Huskies (14-20, 4-6 Pac-10) to one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
Washington right-hander Seth Haehl (1-1) absorbed the loss in relief, allowing two runs and three hits in 1.1 innings.
The Bruins were led at the plate by third baseman Chris Amezquita, who went 2-for-3 with one run. UCLA received one hit from each of eight other hitters. Left fielder Gabe Cohen, first baseman Cody Decker, pinch-hitter Casey Haerther and catcher Steve Rodriguez each tallied one RBI for the Bruins.
UCLA led by a 1-0 margin in the bottom of the second on a two-out run-scoring single to right field by Cohen. The base-hit scored Decker, who led off the frame with a double to left field.
Washington answered with two runs in the top of the third. After catcher Brett Wilcox was hit by a pitch, left fielder Brendan Gardner-Young doubled off a one-hopper that bounced off Cole's foot and into right field. A throwing error on a grounder to third baseman Chris Amezquita allowed both Wilcox and Gardner-Young to score.
The Bruins tied the ballgame, 2-2, in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice by Decker, allowing second baseman Eddie Murray to score from third base. UCLA pushed ahead by a 4-2 margin in the sixth. After leading off the inning with a single to left, Amezquita moved two bases on consecutive groundouts and scored on an infield single by Rodriguez. After Murray's single to right, which allowed Rodriguez to move to third, Haerther singled home the Bruins' catcher with a base-hit through the left side of the infield.
UCLA resumes its three-game Pac-10 series against Washington on Saturday. Game time at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium is 2 p.m.
