Golfers Prepare for U.S. Intercollegiates at Stanford
April 17, 2009
This weekend the 18th-ranked UCLA men's golf team prepares to play in the annual U.S. Intercollegiates, hosted at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
In the 16-team field are six teams ranked among the nation's Top 25, headlined by No.3 USC and fourth-ranked Stanford. Also competing is St. Andrews University of Scotland.
The Stanford Golf Course will play to a par of 70 over 6,727 yards. It also will be the site of the 50th Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship in two weeks.
UCLA Head Coach Derek Freeman has announced a lineup of senior Erik Flores, sophomore Philip Francis and freshmen Gregor Main, Beau Schoolcraft and Alex Shi Yup Kim. Sophomore Connor Driscoll will play as an individual.
'We've started to play a little better the past two events,' said Freeman 'Erik is playing the best he's played in college. If each of the players do their part, then we will have a successful tournament.'
Flores won his second career tournament in his last start. He posted rounds of 65-74-73--212 (-4) at the U.S. Collegiate Championships at The Golf Club of Georgia to tie for medalist honors. In his start prior to that, he tied for second place at the Collegiate Match Play qualifier at The Farms. In his last five rounds, he is eight under par with a scoring average of 70.4. Through Apr. 16, he was ranked 16th nationally.
Ranked 30th nationally is Main, who continues to lead the team in scoring average at 73.0. In eight starts, he has posted a pair of Top 10 finishes, six Top 20s, five rounds under par and three rounds under 70 -- all team leaders.
In seven starts, Francis claims two Top 20 results, three rounds under par and a pair of rounds under 70.
Kim will be making his first start since March when he tied for 65th at the General Hackler Invitational. His best finish this season was a tie for eighth at the Cal Poly Invitational, where he posted a final round 70 (-1).
Schoolcraft last participated in the Match Play Championship where he tied for 36th after posting a final round 71 (-1).
