Kaylyn Castillo's Grand Slam Lifts No. 5 Softball Over No. 14 Cal
April 17, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz.– Kaylyn Castillo’s grand slam in the fifth was the highlight of the night for the Sun Devil offense as the fifth-ranked ASU softball team earned a huge conference win against the 14th-ranked California Bears, 6-4, Friday night in Tempe at Farrington Stadium. This win puts the Sun Devils at 5-3 in the conference and 35-8 overall as the Bears fall to 5-5 in the conference and 29-13 overall.
The Sun Devils made their way back from an early Bears lead to tie it up in the second inning with two RBI’s coming from Katelyn Boyd with a hit to right field to score Kaitlin Cochran in the first inning followed by a solo shot over the center field fence from Christina Zambrana in the second to tie it up at 2-2.
Cal tallied another run on the scoreboard in the third, taking the lead once again, but the ASU bats would rally again in the fifth, as with bases juiced and two outs, Kaylyn Castillo stepped to the plate and landed a long ball over the right center field fence clearing the bases and giving the Sun Devils a comfortable three run lead. Giving up only one more run in the seventh, freshman hurler Hillary Bach threw a solid outing, giving up only one earned run as she was able to keep the Bears’ bats in hibernation to collect the Sun Devil victory. This win puts her record to 20-3 on the season.
ASU will continue conference play this weekend as they host a two game series against the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal. The first game of the series is slated for Saturday, April 18th at 7:00 and will wrap up Sunday, April 19th at 12:00.
