Pac-10 Q&A: Laura Winn, UCLA Diving

April 17, 2009

How do you feel you improved from your freshman to sophomore seasons?
I improved my mentality by controlling my emotions and focusing on the moment to overall become a better competitor.

What are your goals for next season?
My goals for next year are to learn harder dives in order to increase my degree of difficulty on all three events, including a full 10 meter list on platform. I also wish to maintain my improved competitive mentality throughout the season.

On my iPod is...
A little bit of everything! Really, there is anything from Tom Petty to Flo Rida. My favorites are oldies and songs that make you want to dance.

I would love to trade places for a day with...
The President. I'm a little curious how I would do leading the country. Also, I would love to experience firsthand what a normal day for the President of the United States is like.

My favorite team to watch as a kid was...
The San Francisco Giants. My dad was a huge baseball fan and I grew up going to the games on sunny weekend afternoons.

My favorite athlete to watch is...
[Former Bruin] Baron Davis. He's fun to watch because he has the ability to take over any basketball game. Plus, I'm from the Bay Area and I'll never forget the season where he led the Warriors far into the playoffs.

The talent I'd most like to have is...
I wish I could sing. My older sister is actually an opera singer, but I can't even sing in tune. I love to sing out loud anyway, but it would be more fun if it sounded good!

My favorite memory as a Bruin is...
The platform finals at the Pac-10 Championships this year. I'll never forget my fourth dive, a front three and a half on the 10-meter, which guaranteed a third-place finish. After my first experience at Pac-10s, it was such a turn around. I was able to share the special moment with everyone who had supported me through one of the hardest years in my life, including my mom, the team, and many other Bruin parents. Ending up in second place topped off an already incredible day.

The attribute I most like about myself is...
I try to be the best I can be in every aspect of my life. I have high expectations for myself. It forces me to work hard and the outcome is worth it.

My plans after college are...
I would like to take some time to travel. I have never been out of the country and I think it's important to see other parts of the world for the experience. After, I hope to attend Graduate School for Engineering and continue with a dream job of designing systems of alternative energy.

The best thing about the UCLA is...
The amount of opportunity at your fingertips. UCLA has something for everybody in terms of academics, interests, and hobbies and constantly strives for excellence in all of the above.

My funniest teammate is...
Brittany Hill. Within my first two weeks on the team, she was already making me laugh uncontrollably with her quick and clever remarks. She definitely made all the ab work outs much harder.

The sport I'm the worst at is...
Soccer. I generally get by at all other ball sports, but I have no coordination when it comes to soccer. The soccer ball never wants to go where I kick it.

Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is...
I'm a complete nerd! My major is Applied Mathematics and I love watching shows like Mythbusters, How it's Made, and Time Warp on the Discovery channel.

The best advice I've received was...
My grandma told me that it's important to place family, friends, and those you care about ahead of anything else. No matter how much success one might have, it's no good unless you have others to share it with.

My biggest pet peeve is...
When someone tells me the time is 11:00 when it's really 10:55. Five minutes makes a big difference!

What do you miss most about your hometown and why?
My old friends. When we reunite, it feels like we've been hanging out every day no matter how much time has passed since we last saw each other.
