USC Takes Second Straight Over No. 14 Oregon State, 5-2

April 18, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Back-to-back doubles by Billy Pinkerton and Alex Sherrod produced three runs in the top of the ninth Saturday as the USC Trojans beat the No. 14 Oregon State Beavers, 3-2, moving into second place in the Pac-10 Conference standings. With its second straight win in the series, USC has won five straight games in the series against Oregon State as the Trojans recorded their seventh consecutive Pac-10 win to tie a similar mark recorded in 2001.

USC (19-16, 9-5) got another strong effort by freshman starter Andrew Triggs (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy), who allowed two runs on eight hits in eight innings. Triggs allowed two runs in the first and held the Beavers scoreless the remainder of the game. Freshman right-hander Chad Smith threw a perfect ninth for his first collegiate save.

Joe De Pinto and Grant Green had two hits each for the Trojans.

Green doubled home De Pinto to produce a run in the USC first before Oregon State (22-9, 7-4) came back with two in the bottom half, thanks to a two-run single by Stefen Romero. Ricky Oropesa tied it in the third, hitting a hard shot off second baseman John Tommasini's glove for the RBI single to right.

The key sequence came in the OSU eighth. The Beavers put runners at first and second with no outs. Romero tried to lay a sacrifice bunt down, but Pinkerton crashed from third and threw to Green, who was covering the bag for the first out. Green then fired a strike to first for the rare 5-6-3 double play and a John Wallace fly out got Triggs out of the jam.

In the ninth, Anthony Vasquez singled to left off Kraig Sitton (0-2). Hector Rabago then popped up a bunt, but OSU first baseman Jared Norris tried a diving catch, but could not make the play as the ball bounced off him to put runners at first and second. Pinch hitter Garret Houts popped up a bunt attempt for the first out, but Pinkerton then blooped a fly ball that literally hit the right field line for the go-ahead run. Sherrod then laced a two-run double past a diving Norris to finish the scoring. Smith then entered the game and retired the bottom half of the Beavers' order to secure the series win for the Trojans.

The series concludes tomorrow and will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
