Men's Crew Completes Stanford Invitational

April 19, 2009

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The Oregon State men's rowing team finished off a weekend that saw it compete against three of the top 5 crews in the country on Sunday at Redwood Shores, Calif.

The Oregon State Varsity 8+ faced windy conditions in their Friday night race against defending IRA Champion and No. 2 ranked Wisconsin. The Badgers were able to use a quick start to establish a lead that they would hold for the whole race. Oregon State used the experience to its advantage however and came out with a strong showing against No. 5 Stanford on Saturday. The race was close throughout the 2,000-meter course with the Beavers finishing just 1.8 seconds behind the Cardinal.

The Beavers' V8+ finished the weekend with a matchup against current No. 1 California. Facing `A' and `B' varsity crews from California, Oregon State shot out of the starting block and threatened the Bears constantly throughout the race. However, it was not enough to knock off the top crew in the country and the Cal crews were able to take first and second place.

The Freshman 8+ began the weekend with a tough race against the Badgers that saw them finish a distant second. The freshman crew improved their time substantially in the Saturday race against Stanford, finishing with a time 42 seconds better than their Friday race. Sunday brought a race similar to Saturday, as the Beavers raced a good piece but were unable to overtake the California freshman for first place.

Oregon State's Open 8+ had similar results, dropping Friday's race to Wisconsin and improving its time the next day. However, the 35-second improvement was not enough to overtake Stanford.

For the Sunday races against California, the Open 8+ split into a Varsity 4+ and a Freshman 4+ to take on the Bears. The V4+ was beaten off the start by two Bear crews and was unable to catch either one. The freshmen held close to their counterparts from Berkeley, but were unable to pass the Bears.

'Going into the three-race weekend we were looking to improve each day and each race and we did just that,' said head coach Steve Todd. 'Now we have to go take that improvement and get ready for the Windermere Cup.'

The Beavers will return to action on May 2nd when they travel to Seattle, Wash. to take part in the Windermere Cup hosted by Washington. Check back with for all things rowing.
