Oregon State Wins In 10, 5-4, Over USC
April 19, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Koa Kahalehoe scored the game-winning run Sunday in the bottom of the 10th after pitcher Daniel Cooper's throwing error as the No. 14 Oregon State Beavers beat the USC Trojans, 5-4, to avoid the Pac-10 Conference series sweep. John Tommasini laid a bunt down with runners at first and second with no outs in the 10th, but Cooper's throw sailed wide right at third as Kahalehoe tallied the final run.
Oregon State (23-9, 8-4) moved back into second place in the conference, ahead of USC (19-17, 9-6) and snapped the Trojans' streak of seven straight Pac-10 Conference wins.
The Trojans clawed back from a four-run deficit after the Beavers scored four runs off USC starter Robert Stock in the first. Stefen Romero doubled home Joey Wong before Stock walked Max Shupe to load the bases. With two outs, Logan Lotti hit a ground ball to second, but Joe De Pinto mishandled the ball as the error led to OSU's second run. Michael Miller, who was 3-for-4 on the afternoon, followed with a two-run single to center.
Double plays turned by the Trojan defense in the third and fourth innings frustrated the Beavers, who failed to break the game open and left 11 runners on base. Stock, who walked six and hit two batters in seven innings, settled down and struck out four straight batters to keep the Trojans close.
Grant Green doubled in the top of the seventh to put runners at second and third with no outs. Ricky Oropesa then hit an RBI groundout to plate Mike O'Neill from third for the first run. Anthony Vasquez hit an RBI single to left and Brandon Garcia later walked. Pinch hitter Keith Castillo hit a 1-2 pitch by OSU starter Jorge Reyes up the middle to make it a 4-3 lead before right fielder Alex Sherrod tied it with an RBI single to left.
John Wallace doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Beavers and USC head coach Chad Kreuter elected to intentionally walk Jared Norris and Romero to load the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Adalberto Santos then lifted a fly ball to right that Sherrod caught in foul territory. Sherrod then fired a strike to Rabago at the plate, tagging out Wallace for the 9-2 double play to send the game into extra innings. After the Trojans went in order in the 10th, Kahalehoe hit an infield single and advanced to second on Miller's single to right with two strikes before Tommasini's play that ended the game.
USC plays a non conference game on Tuesday (April 21) at Loyola Marymount. The game will start at 3 p.m. and be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
