Sarah Fansler Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

April 20, 2009

USC junior Sarah Fansler came through with a big doubles upset and the match-clinching singles win for USC in a regular-season finale win over No. 10 UCLA to not only snap a five-match losing streak by the Trojans against the Bruins but also secure a historic undefeated Pac-10 finish and claim USC's first-ever Pac-10 Championship. For her efforts on the history-making winning day for USC - which also broke up a 21-year run of Stanford standing as a Pac-10 champion - Fansler has earned her first career selection as the Pac-10 Player of the Week.

Teaming up with Lyndsay Kinstler as the #65 doubles team, Fansler got an important first doubles win for USC, upsetting #56 Seguso/Wetmore 8-2 to help set up the Trojans to claim the doubles point in the match.

In singles, with USC up 3-1 and the remaining matches going into three sets, Fansler rallied back from a third-set deficit to clinch victory for USC. Fansler trailed 2-3 in the third getting a break and a hold to pull ahead for the first time in the set, up 4-3. Fansler broke Johansson again for a 5-3 lead, and although Johansson would cut it to 5-4, Fansler held strong and dealt out one last break to win her match 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 and clinch victory for the 2009 Pac-10 champion Trojans.

Fansler is the third Trojan in the past four weeks to be named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week, following up wins by senior Amanda Fink and sophomore Maria Sanchez.

The Women of Troy now head to Ojai, Calif., for singles and doubles competition at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships, held April 23-26.
