Arizona's Lastrapes and Washington's Lawrie Named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
April 21, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- ARIZONA sophomore outfielder Brittany Lastrapes and WASHINGTON junior pitcher Danielle Lawrie have been named the Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 13-19, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Lastrapes, a native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., helped the ninth-ranked Arizona Wildcats sweep the home series against the Bay Area schools, picking up at least two hits in each game and batting in 10 runs over the weekend. On Friday, Lastrapes faced the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal’s ace Missy Penna. The sophomore notched three hits in four at bats, including a three-run home run which secured the 12-4 victory for the Wildcats.
Setting the tone Saturday night against No. 14 California, Lastrapes singled to lead off Arizona in the first inning, only to make the rotation and hit a grand slam later in the first. On the weekend, the Wildcat tallied seven hits including knocking out a home run in all three games.
This marks the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Lastrapes and the 125th in Arizona history.
Lawrie earned all three victories for the Huskies in their sweep of the Oregon schools over the weekend. The Langley, British Columbia, native allowed just one run in 23.0 innings and struck out a total of 33 batters, finishing the weekend with a 0.30 ERA. The junior threw back-to-back shutouts against Oregon and Oregon State, bringing her total to a nation-leading 15 shutouts. Lawrie’s 15 shutouts are one shy of the Washington single-season record.
Taking a no-hitter into the six inning against Oregon on Friday night, Lawrie finished the game with 11 batters retired and only two hits. Of the 23.0 innings Lawrie pitched on the weekend, 22.0 were scoreless, with the lone run coming in the seventh inning of the Huskies’ 7-1 victory over Oregon State. On the season, Lawrie holds a 0.58 ERA and has notched 309 strikeouts.
This marks the ninth career honor for Lawrie and fifth accolade of the season. The Husky’s fifth honor ties Arizona pitcher Alicia Hollowell for most Pitcher of the Week distinctions in one season. Washington has had 67 Pac-10 Players of the Week overall.
