Women's Volleyball Announces 2009 Schedule
April 21, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - Head coach John Dunning has announced the schedule for the 2009 Stanford women's volleyball team. Competing in one of the nation's toughest conferences, the Cardinal will look to defend three consecutive Pac-10 titles, make a run to its fourth straight Final Four and battle for its seventh NCAA Championship.
Stanford opens the season on Aug. 28 at the Notre Dame Invitational, playing matches against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant LSU as well as Denver and Notre Dame to start the year (Aug. 28-30).
The team is then scheduled to compete in the UOP Banker's Classic in Stockton, Calif. (Sept. 4-5), where it will play No. 10 Florida in a rematch of last year's regional semifinal. On the second day of the tournament, Stanford will match up with either San Jose State or Pacific.
In its final preseason road trip, the Cardinal will play UTSA, Weber State and Hawai'i in the Hawai'i Invitational in Honolulu (Sept. 10-12). The Cardinal and No. 7 Rainbow Wahine will meet on the final day of the event in a rematch of last year's Fort Collins Regional Final.
Stanford will host the first annual Pac-10/WCC Challenge to begin the home season, hosting three Bay Area teams coming off 2008 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Cardinal will meet Saint Mary's on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in its home opener. The following night, the team will battle San Francisco. Pac-10 rival California will also participate in the event.
The Pac-10 season begins on Friday, Sept. 25, when Stanford takes on Cal in Berkeley. The Cardinal will be defending three consecutive conference championships, while competing in the conference that sent six teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2008, had five make NCAA Regionals and three make regional finals.
Stanford will play key match-ups against regional finalists Washington and California in Maples Pavilion on Oct. 10 and Nov. 27, respectively. Traditional power USC and regional semifinalist UCLA will come to The Farm over Halloween weekend, Oct. 30-31, while regional semifinalist Oregon will make the trip on Nov. 13. Stanford's first Pac-10 match in Maples Pavilion is set for Oct. 9 against Washington State.
The NCAA Tournament begins with opening rounds, Dec. 3-6. Stanford will serve as an NCAA Regional host again this season, with action to take place in Maples Pavilion, Dec. 11-12. The Final Four is set for Dec. 17-19 in Tampa, Fla.
Stanford returns 10 of the letterwinners that carried the team to the NCAA title match last season, including first-team All-American Alix Klineman. Other returning starters include middle blocker Janet Okogbaa, setter/hitter Cassidy Lichtman and libero Gabi Ailes.
