California hosts the Brutus Hamilton Invitational and the New York Road Runners Distance Carnival this weekend at Edwards Stadium on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25. On Friday, the running events begin at 4 p.m. with the women's 400-meter hurdles. The NYRR Distance Carnival goes from 5:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday night. The Cal men are currently ranked No. 23 in the USTFCCCA rankings.

Last Time Out: 115th Big Meet
Cal put up a number of strong performances in the Big Meet last Saturday, including setting three meet records from senior Katie Morgan, junior Ryan Young and junior Kimyon Broom. Morgan, the defending NCAA pole vault champion, took top honors with a jump of 13-6.50 (4.13m). Young broke the previous Big Meet record in the javelin, which was set in 1931, with his throw of 224-10 (68.52m). Broom also set a new Big Meet record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.26. She surpassed the old record time of 13.43. In the men's 1500, junior Yosef Ghebray clocked Cal's sixth-best time in school history at 3:42.14, while senior Eric Lee notched the 10th-best time in the program (3:44.01). Both times were NCAA regional qualifiers.

Last Year's Brutus Hamilton Invitational
At last year's Brutus Hamilton Invitational, Martin Maric took first place in the javelin with a season-best, NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 220-04 (67.16m) and the discus. Jake Hanson took top honors in the 400 meters, clocking a regional-qualifying mark of 46.76. The women's 4x100-meter relay took first with a regional-qualifying time of 44.85, which also ranked fourth all-time in school history. Kristen Meister tied her season-best mark of 5-8.75 (1.75m) in the high jump, which was also a regional-qualifying mark, to take the top spot.

Brutus Hamilton Invitational - NYRR Distance Invitational
At the 2009 Brutus Hamilton Invitational from April 24-25, Edwards Stadium will go under the lights for the New York Road Runners Distance Invitational on April 24. Sixteen Olympians will be participating, including 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials 1500-meter champion Shannon Rowbury, two-time Olympic steeplechaser Anthony Famiglietti, and 2008 U.S. 10,000-meter Olympian Jorge Torres.
An international field of athletes will be attempting to achieve qualifying times at 5000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the 3000-meter steeplechase for the IAAF World Championships later this summer in Berlin. In partnering with Cal to host the NYRR Distance Carnival, NYRR will arrange pacemakers for the seeded heats of the men's and women's 5000- and 10,000-meter races.

NCAA Regional Qualifiers
Cal currently boasts 27 NCAA regional qualifiers, 14 on the women's team and 13 on the men's team. The regional qualifiers are - Brook Turner (400), Cherrelle Garrett (100, 200), Deborah Maier (5000), the women's 4x100 and 4x400, Allison Stokke (Pole Vault), Inika McPherson (High Jump), Kristen Meister (High Jump), Artensia Young (Triple Jump), Katie Morgan (Pole Vault), Evelyn Smith (400-H), Cyrena Giordano (Pole Vault), Kimyon Broom (100-meter hurdles), Kellan Patterson (100), Jordan Paul (110-H), Jake Hanson (400-H), Francis Gadayan (800), Yosef Ghebray (10,000, 1500), Eric Lee (1500), Martin Maric (Discus, Javelin), Patrick Kowalsky (Shot Put), Ryan Shuler (Pole Vault), Sebastian Sam (800) and Ryan Young (Javelin).
