Pac-10 Q&A: Hilary Barte, Stanford Tennis

April 22, 2009

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
My goals for the rest of this season are to continue to get fitter and faster every day so I can be competing deep into May.

On my iPod is...
A lot of different kinds of music: Coldplay, John Legend, U2, John Mayer, Citizen Cope, Lauryn Hill, to name a few. I also listen to Juanes to study for my espanol tests.

I would love to trade places for a day with...
I would love to trade places for a day with a 6-year old Hilary Barte. All I did was eat, go on play dates, and sleep...so awesome!

My favorite team to watch as a kid was...
My entire family loves the Los Angeles Lakers, so I jumped on the bandwagon too. I remember exactly where I was standing in our living room when Robert Horry made the 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat San Antonio in the playoffs.

My favorite athlete to watch is...
Tiger Woods because he always seems to put himself in a position to win, regardless of the conditions. Like when he made the putt to send the U.S. Open into extra holes while having a bum knee...that was amazing.

The talent I'd most like to have is...
The talent I'd most like to have it to sing like Lauryn Hill. I probably wouldn't have any friends because I would just sing to myself all the time.

My favorite memory as a Cardinal is...
The first time I put on the white 'Stanford tennis' shirt with red writing. These shirts aren't sold anywhere - you can only have one if you're a part of the program. It made it sink in that my Stanford career was starting, and that it was the start of something really special.

The attribute I most like about myself is...
The attribute that I most like about myself is that I like simple things. It helps me avoid getting caught up in petty problems or situations.

My plans after college are...
My plans for after college are to find a career path that suits me and to go after it everyday as hard as I can.

The best thing about the Stanford is...
The people. Literally every person has been a part of or done something incredible. It's really humbling and inspiring at the same time to be in the same classes as them.

My funniest teammate is...
Isamarie Perez. She has kind of an intimidating presence - tall with overly long arms, a calm demeanor, and extremely witty - so she can say the funniest things about anything. And most of the time they're so funny because they're true.

The sport I'm the worst at is...
The sport that I am the worst at is bowling. The holes are too big for my fingers so I have zero control of the ball.

Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is...
I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was 10. We used to live on a huge hill... like Tour de France huge.

The best advice I've received was...
My dad told me the best advice when he said that 'sometimes the road has to be rough before it can be smooth.'

My biggest pet peeve is...
Rude people. Like when you're driving and you let the other person go and they don't even put up a hand to say thank you. So rude!

What do you miss most about your hometown?
I miss the sun, the heat, my house and everyone in it.
