Cats Await Calls from NFL
April 22, 2009
TUCSON--Several University of Arizona football players are on the radar and listed as potential selections in the NFL Draft to be held this Saturday and Sunday in New York City.
Observers have listed Eben Britton, who decided to forego his final year of eligibility in Tucson to enter the draft, as a potential first-round selection. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound left tackle was a first-team all-conference honoree in 2008.
Should he be selected in that round, he'd be the 11th first-round pick out of Arizona, joining most-recent top choice Antoine Cason, the cornerback who was selected 27th by the San Diego Chargers last April.
Senior receiver Mike Thomas also has potential first-day status in the draft after a good showing at the NFL Combine earlier this spring. The all-time Pac-10 receptions leader (259), Thomas also has an all-purpose background that could help him land a role in the professional ranks.
Other Wildcats who more realistically await possible free-agent calls from teams include kicker Jason Bondzio, linebacker Ronnie Palmer, safety Nate Ness and quarterback Willie Tuitama. Offensive lineman James Tretheway has been mentioned in that group as well, along with cornerback Marquis Hundley, guard Joe Longacre and linebacker Adrian McCovy.
