Clayton, Klahn Advance To Pac-10 Men's Singles Quarterfinals

OJAI, Calif. - Stanford's No. 20 Alex Clayton and No. 48 Bradley Klahn won two singles matches today to advance to the quarterfinals of the championship singles bracket at the Pac-10 tournament today at Libbey Park in Ojai.
In the Round of 32, Klahn put up the first victory for the Cardinal when he defeated UCLA's Amit Inbar 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Ryan Thacher also won his match, besting Oregon's Alexander Cornelissen in three sets, 5-7, 7-6, 6-1. Clayton, like Klahn, dispatched his opponent Jose Izquierdo (Oregon) in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3), but Stanford was unable to go five-for-five as senior Blake Muller fell to the Bruins' Holden Seguso 6-2, 6-1 and junior Richard Wire dropped his match to Seguso's teammate, Michael Look, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
In the Round of 16, Thacher fell to California's Pedro Zerbini, 6-2, 6-4, Klahn beat USC's Abdullah Magdas 6-4, 6-3, and Clayton upended the Trojans' Matt Kecki, 7-5, 7-5. Klahn will play UCLA's Matt Brooklyn and Clayton will play Arizona's Andres Carrasco. All championship singles quarterfinals will be played at noon tomorrow.
In the invitational singles bracket, both sophomore Greg Hirshman and senior Jeff Zeller advanced to the quarterfinals. Hirshman topped Cal's Tommie Murphy four-and-four, and Zeller rolled to a straight-set victory over Washington's Alex Rosinski, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Ted Kelly, who was set to face the Trojans' Daniel Gliner in the Round of 16 withdrew from singles play. Hirshman and Zeller will also both play at noon tomorrow; Hirshman against Duncan MacDonald-Korth (Oregon) and Zeller against Daniel Nguyen (USC).
Doubles play is set to begin tomorrow, and Stanford matches will begin at 9 a.m. as No. 35 Wire and Muller will play Arizona's Andres Carrasco and Ravid Hazi in the championship bracket, followed by two Stanford matches at 10:30 a.m. No. 45 Klahn and Thacher versus UCLA's Matt Brooklyn and Seguso and Clayton and Kelly versus Oregon's Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco, also in the championship bracket. Hirshman and Zeller will team up for a 3 p.m. match against the Golden Bears' Murphy and Evan Rose in the invitational bracket.
